Feeding Community Wellness
We know that nutritious food is an important piece of good health and well-being, which is why, in fall 2021, we were thrilled to open The Dr. Miguel & Denese Brito Nutrition and Education Center located in the MedCenter for Women. There, patients can access healthy food items — at no charge to them. They leave with the confidence of having everything needed for balanced meals until their food crisis passes. The market maintains a supply of food bags medically tailored to patients with conditions like diabetes, heart disease and anemia, or patients can customize their shopping experience by choosing from a list of available foods. Classes focus on healthy eating, financing and budgeting, and how to access food assistance programs like SNAP.
“We are proud to have created a legacy of support through The Brito Food Program,” Denise Brito says, “Ensuring patients in need not only get nutritious foods, but have an opportunity to learn how to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
”We are grateful for support from our partners, Food Lion, Second Harvest Food Bank and Backpack Beginnings, and for the community members who donated 3,000 pounds of food, baby supplies and hygiene products and more than $2,800 during our day-long food drive."
