Inspirational Giving from Cone Health Pediatricians

Cone Health pediatricians who dedicate their professional lives to caring for infants and children have made heartfelt donations in honor of women and children to further enhance the care of families in the community.

Whitney Haddix, MD, who is part of Cone Health’s pediatric teaching service, and her husband Kevin Haddix, MD, a Cone Health orthopedic surgeon, were moved to make a donation to honor a personal loss.

“Our donation honors my husband’s brother who died at several days old from what appeared to be a congenital issue in the 1980s,” shares Dr. Haddix, whose donation supports a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) room.

“To see the changes in the NICU and how community input impacted the design of the new private rooms shows families how much we care for them,” adds Dr. Haddix. “We are making such a difference by having everything patients need in the same welcoming place.”

“As with most pediatricians, I am inspired to do what I can to help the children of our community receive the best health care possible,” says Michael Cinoman, MD, who serves Cone Health in various capacities, including as the director of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and medical director of Cone Health Medical Group’s pediatric care division. “This small philanthropic opportunity – in the big scheme of things – is just another way of helping our patients and program.”

Dr. Cinoman’s gift of a bench outside the Women’s & Children’s Center gives families an opportunity to take a break and reconnect: “This is a place for parents and children to get outside to rest for a bit while they are likely undergoing some pretty stressful situations.”

“Beyond our professional roles at Cone Health, we are part of the community, and we feel like it is important to be part of the community-wide effort to support the new Women’s & Children’s Center,” says Hilary McCormick, MD, a pediatrician with Cone Health’s Tim and Carolynn Rice Center for Child and Adolescent Health, about the donation she and her colleagues made, which is recognized as part of the donor wall in the Women’s & Children’s Center lobby.

“Our gift is an extension of our staff’s daily generosity – we are inspired by one another to donate clothes, books, diapers and other essentials to help with many of our patients’ unmet needs,” adds Dr. McCormick. “Our donation helps provide important items like thermometers and Vitamin D that many families we serve cannot access because of financial, transportation or other barriers.”

“Our new center will greatly improve the experience of care we provide our families,” concludes Dr. Cinoman. “While the providers will be the same, the modern facility allows for many new services to be provided to improve the care our newborns and mothers receive.”
